Hello friends!
Hope everyone is staying safe, and sane. I’m writing just to share a few updates.
I was interviewed recently for the “Everyday Art Room” podcast, with Candido Crespo. We talked about developing student criticality through both content and classroom culture, and shifting the power structures in our classrooms.
I will be presenting two live workshops at the National Art Education Association’s 2022 Conference in NYC next month. If you are attending the conference, please look me up in the schedule and come say hello! One of the workshops (Decentering Whiteness in Art Education) will be livestreamed for virtual participants as well.
I am almost done with this month’s substack article - which focuses on practical tools and strategies for teaching with issue-oriented Contemporary Art. Actually… the article may already be done? I just need to overthink some tiny edits and wrestle my feelings for hours before sharing! Aiming for Monday.
Some things bringing me joy right now:
What I’m Reading: Freedom Dreams by Robin D. G. Kelley (Quoted above)
What I’m Watching: Art, Museums, and Fear of a Black Planet, lecture by Bridget R. Cooks (Author of Exhibiting Blackness: African Americans and the American Art Museum)
What I’m Learning: Punch Needle Embroidery
Appreciate you all for being here. It is so, so nice to have a way to communicate with friends and colleagues away from social media.
Much love,
Alisha

Fantastic podcast episode. What inspires me most is the way you live the classroom as a shared space with shared power.
